As a child growing up in Juneau, Johnny Ellis was always fascinated by the Native art that surrounded him. He spent many hours at the Territorial Museum as well as "curio shops" of the day, studying the objects from all parts of Alaska that held such a strong appeal for him. Art was his favorite and best school subject. After serving in the Navy and working construction in Alaska, he began crafting handmade walrus ivory jewelry. In 1986, with tourism increasing in Juneau, he began selling his jewelry from a vending cart on the street. In 1991, he and his wife, Kathy, launched the Raven's Journey Gallery. Johnny's fossil ivory jewelry continues to be an important part of the gallery. Since its beginning in 1991, the Raven's Journey Gallery has offered top quality Native art from all parts of Alaska, as well as neighboring areas of the Northwest Coast. Our collection includes Tlingit, Haida, Tsimshian, Aleut, Inupiaq, Yupik and Siberian Yupik work. Everything we sell -- from tiny walrus ivory fetish pieces to stunning full tusk carvings, baleen baskets to wood masks to 8 ft cedar totems--is the finest available, purchased with respect and appreciation for the artists who produce this work. When buying art, we look for quality of workmanship and attention to detail. The best work has a spirit that can be felt as well as seen; many visitors comment on the intense spiritual energy they feel in our gallery. Buying, displaying, and talking about this art is our favorite thing to do. We enjoy working together as a family; in addition to the two of us our son, Leo, is now an important member of our team. We hope you can visit us in person. If not, hopefully this web site will give you a glimpse of what makes the Raven's Journey Gallery such a special place. physical location: 435 South Franklin St, Juneau, AK 99801 907 4634686 open year-round
